Neighborhood in Vienna to Stay

Hello all:

I have a very sudden change in itinerary and will spend 4 days in Vienna TOMORROW. I would like to ask you where I should stay. My travelmate is a big coffee fan and he would like to be able to walk to cafes. I am in my early 40's and not a party animal. I'd rather not be in the middle of tourist center, as I don't enjoy rubbing shoulders with mobs of tourists. Somewhere quiet (I am a light sleeper) with reasonable transit connections would be great. Of course, safety, is my number one priority. My budget is middle of the road. Nothing extravagant but no youth hostels either. I definitely don't need to stay in the ring, as I prefer being with locals.

I am not in the US and cannot even buy Rick's book for this last-minute trip.

I am basing my search on a Google Map called "Third Wave Coffee Places". So, thus far, I am considering these areas:

-Sigmund Freud Museum (U bahn stop: Schottentor)
-U bahn stop: Rathaus
-U bahn stop: Neubaugasse

I have no idea whether these areas are too noisy and over-commercialized. Any insights would be much appreciated for this last-minute trip. Thanks a million!!!

A personal favorite in the Neubaugasse area is K&T Guesthouse. (GREAT schnitzel restaurant nearby, too) EDIT: Sorry. I see they are sold out on Booking.com. But we liked the area, close to transit and not a bad walk to Ring trams.

We are going in May/June 17 and have booked a room at Pension Suzanne. I believe it is close to the area you mention.

A few things:

  1. Don't dismiss the first district. It is charming and there are many quiet areas. Hotel König von Ungarn is available in booking.com.

  2. Hotel Das Tyrol is right across from the MuseumsQuartier. Available on booking.com.

  3. 25hours Hotel available on booking.com. Best rooftop bar. Great location.

  4. Vienna is safe. Everywhere..

  5. Vienna is small and compact with excellent public transportation.

  6. This article tells you all you need to know about Third Wave coffee here: http://www.viennawurstelstand.com/food-drink/coffee-and-cigrettes/12-cafes-where-to-get-your-third-wave-coffee-in-vienna.html

  7. Go to the Rathaus one evening for dinner at the Food and Film Festival.

  8. On the areas you list above, Neubaugasse is the most interesting, but doesn't it come down to where there are available hotels?

Steven, honestly not the best area and in a very busy street.

Well , looking at your four and five above , I would certainly agree . While noise would absolutely be a consideration , I made certain to take a room facing the inner courtyard to minimize that . Leopoldstadt holds a certain interest for me , and the price difference for comparable hotels within the ring was considerably higher when I booked my reservation . ( 115 EU / night as opposed to 170 EU and up ) In light of the length of time my wife and I travel in the fall , price is somewhat of a factor . Taking into account the online reviews ( for what they are worth ) and recommendations on this site ( Thanks , Nancy ) I doubt we will be unhappy . Of course , I continue to buy lottery tickets for each Saturday night drawing , and when they pick the right numbers , I will certainly be looking at some other lodging choices . Looking forward to Vienna this fall , it has a strong draw for me , as does Paris . Always a tough choice as to which to visit .

In May 2013, we stayed at Hotel Zipser in the 8th District, a few blocks away from the Rathaus. It was a decent hotel and a short walk to the Ringstrasse. So, it is a good option if you want to be near the Rathaus. However, last August, we stayed at Spiess and Spiess in the 3rd District, very close to the U3 (Rochusgasse station). If I had to choose, Spiess and Spiess wins hands down. Much larger rooms, better breakfast, and more convenient location. In Vienna, it is very easy to get around on the outstanding public transportation no matter where you are in the city. In 1992-93, we lived literally around the corner from the Freud Museum in the 9th District, but don't recall any nearby hotels, which apparently is still the case based on a quick booking.com search.
