Hi, I will be staying in Seefeld for a week to ski and would like to do a day trip to the Zugspitze. Looking for tips on how to get from one place to another. thanks
Get on the train in Seefeld (nice small station right in the middle of town) and get off in Garmisch-Partenkirchen to change for the train up the hill.
If the train from Innsbruck via Seefeld terminates at Mittenwald you will have a quick and easy change onto the train towards Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Some go through, some have the change.
Easy.
The Zugspitze is shared between Austria and Germany. The summit is exactly on the border of the two countries. Consequently there are two cable cars going to the top, one from the Austrian side, the other from the German side.
In either case you have to go from Seefeld to Garmisch-Partenkirchen by train. There you have the choice when changing trains: going to Ehrwald station for the Austrian cable car, or going to Eibsee for the German cable car.
Just in case, take your passport with you as you will be crossing borders.
OK, I have some questions yet. Here is what I'm planning:
- Leave Seefeld to Garmish via train.
- Transfer to Zugspitzbahn taking the cogwheel up to the Zugspitze.
- Lunch atop.
- Ride down the gondola to Eibsee.
- Bus back to Garmisch after enjoying the lake.
- Train back to Seefeld.
Where/when to buy tickets? I presume I buy the train ticket to/from Garmisch at the station in Seefeld, then buy a round trip to the Zupsitze in Garmisch? I see online ticketing but not sure how that works, if I need to print or by phone? And the bus I presume is a few Euros when boarding?
