Need Hotel/Pension Suggestion for College Student Staying One Week in Vienna

My son is a U.S. university student and will be traveling to Vienna for one week around Thanksgiving. He will be checking out a program and visiting a friend currently studying in Vienna. The friend has suggested some hotels that are close to where he's staying. These hotels are Ibis Wien City, Falkensteiner Hotel Wien Margarten, and Vienna Star Apartments. My son says reliable Wi-Fi is a must for him when he does school work. I say safety, cleanliness, and hopefully a good breakfast are desired.

From what I've seen on maps, these above-mentioned hotels are near the city center and seem like a good location.

I would appreciate any suggestions for the hotel/pension. I just sent for Rick's Vienna guide book today,k but I don't think I can wait to receive it to book a hotel.

Thank You,

Cheryl

Cheryl, I've always found the Ibis a good value. If your not familiar with the Accor chain, its properties (Sofitel, Novotel, Ibis and Mercure) are quite similar to the North American Starwood, Hilton, Holiday Inn properties. They're modern, efficient, clean/well maintained, etc.; while they generally lack "charm", your son may find the price + location + wi-fi perfect for his needs. I'd check out the Vienna Ibis property online and view the photos.

Dear TravelMom,

As a former college student who traveled all around Europe, I can promise you that a hotel or pension full of "old" people is the last place your son would enjoy staying - especially a dull and boring one like those you have listed.

He should check out a cool and vibrant hostel which will be full of people his own age. Heck, he might even have a good time in the hostel! I would highly recommend the Wombat's at Naschmarkt. It is kind of a legendary hostel, exceptionally clean and in a great location, which is close to his friend as well. Oh, and it also has free wifi and breakfast.

Agree with Emily. Wombats would be a way better experience than the hotels.

Hi,

Totally agree with the above on staying at Wombats in Vienna. Any Wombats is good, although in Vienna I've stayed only at the one on Mariahilferstrasse across from Westbahnhof. Both private and dorm rooms are available at Wombats.
