Need help with last minute trip itinerary. Please!!!

Hi All -
My husband will be traveling to Germany on business next week and his trip times out well to end at the beginning of my 16 year old's spring break in California. We decided (last minute) to join him so my son and I will depart from LAX on Thurs 4/11 and arrive in Munich at 4:35pm on 4/12. My husband will already have a rental car from his business travel so he will be picking us up at the airport. We have a little apartment booked in the heart of Salzburg for 2 nights (Fri 4/12 and Sat 4/13) only since that's the only availability they had. We plan to spend all day Saturday seeing Salzburg before checking out on Sunday, 4/14. We also have a place in Prague booked for the following 5 nights... 4/14 - 4/19. Our final night, Friday 4/19 will be spent in Munich near the airport as we depart for home around noon on 4/20.

Here's my issue, I think we have too many nights in Prague. I'm wondering if we shouldn't put a night or two somewhere along our route from Salzburg to Prague? Austria is so gorgeous and I think my 16 year old will tire of a big city for that many days. Europe has so many cathedrals, castles, museums, and ancient architecture and culture that I think it will be a bit overwhelming and feel too much like his AP European History class that he's looking to have a break from at the moment. He wants to experience all of that (or we wouldn't be going to Europe) but doesn't want to fill his break with strictly history/art/culture etc. He wants to experience nature and small villages too. Any ideas on a perfect spot along our route to explore for 1-2 days? And does this even make sense? I've looked at maps and Google Earth/Maps to get an idea but I'm torn. Cesky Krumlov looks beuatiful but it's another city. Ugh. Please help. Would love suggestions from those who have traveled along the route from Salzburg to Prague through Cesky Krumlov. Thanks so much in advance.

I haven't been there, but I guess I wouldn't classify Cesky Krumlov as a city (population 13,000+). I know it's heavily touristed, but in April maybe even that wouldn't be so bad. Also, know that there are some great places around the edges of Prague to get into the "green."

Add an extra day in Salzburg and head over to Berchtesgaden and Konigsee. Stop along the way in Bad Reichenhall. While this is actually Germany and not Austria, it would fit into your game plan and cut out another city stay. Another option could be Passau. It cuts your drive in half back to Munich plus you can take the time saved to stop in smaller towns along the way on the 18th and 19th.

I hope this helped. Not Austria, but options.

A one day trip from Salzburg to Prague strikes me as impossible. EU driving is slow driving except on expressways & there is a lot to see on the way. From Salzburg, wander thru the Salzakammergut toward Linz (which skip), but in the vicinity,. see Wels, Wilhering, St Florian, & Mathausen concentration camp (Gas chamber). Do not miss Chesky Krumlov. (a small town).

Expose the kid to classical music: Mozart's Posthorn Serenade or Coronation Mass in Salzburg, Linz Symphony in guess where. and then Smetana's Ma Vlast. One road from Linz to Chesky Krumlov follows the Vlatavatall, the Moldau Valley, the second movement of Ma Vlast. You drive across Bohemia's Meadows & Forests (4th movement) and arrive in Prague beneath "The High Castle" (1st movement). that done, go visit the high castle one day in Prague.

In Prague, have dinner at U Bile Krave, a French restaurant featuring beef from prized Charollis cattle. Make the kid eat a steak to show him how different beef can be from one country to another & from one breed of cows to another (you should avoid the beef except for bouef bourginoun}

Unless you are set on Cesky Krumlov, you could make a swing through Germany (Autobahns/better roads). Maybe stop in Regensburg (another larger city) for an overnight on the way to Prag? Maybe a country route to Burghausen (castle) then Straubing, DE might be something to consider for a smaller cites. Lots of options.
