My husband and I are visiting in May - We were planning on driving from Munich, early morning, to Salzburg and then having the entire next day open before leaving the 3rd day for Prague.
In Salzburg we actually were only planning on touring the Hohensalzburg Castle and Stiegl Brewery
The main things we want to see are outside of Salzburg, we want to do the Bertchesgaden Salt Mine tour, and visit Hohenwerfen Castle and drive around the Bertschesgaden National Park.
I'm thinking that we may have to add one extra day but I really need recommendations on the best drive around Bertschesgaden National Park as we travel to Salzburg.. Any and all recommendations are appreciated.
Hi Diane,
You could actually stay in the Berchtesgaden area for your itinerary. The easy drive from Berchtesgaden to Salzburg is under 30 minutes. In addition to the Salt Mine in Berchtesgaden, there's also one in nearby Hallein, Austria. A scenic drive in the Berchtesgaden area (above Berchtesgaden) is the Rossfeld Panorama Road. There'a also a couple of Sommerrodelbahns, one just above Berchtesgaden and one in Duerrnberg, on the way to Hallein and Werfen. A scenic drive to Hallein and Werfen would be: Berchtesgaden, Unterau, Oberau, Hallein to Werfen. This takes under 1 hour and is a very pretty drive over the mountains.

If interested, we loved our 3 stays (10/06, 10/07, 9/09) at the Pension Mayringerlehen in Ramsau be Berchtesgaden and our 2 stays (12/10, 12/13) in Schonau am Konigsee at the Guesthouse Friedwiese.

I would add another day/night to this beautiful area.

Berchtesgaden sits at the mouth of a dead-end valley, so there's really only two ways to get to Salzburg- B305 through the mountains, or doubling back towards Bad Reichenhall. Either route works fine.
Other than driving through, to and from the town of Berchtesgaden, you really can't drive through the park. It's mostly Alpine terrain accessible only by hiking.
Just to clarify, the B305 drive to Salzburg is a pretty level, very easy 30 minute max. drive. No mountains to go over. Done it so many times, as recently as a couple times just last year in December. You can drive the B305, you can go via Bad Reichenhall or you can go the way I described to Hallein, then north to Salzburg, the B305 being the quick and easy way.

I agree with Paul. I'd stay in Berchtesgaden and day trip to Salzburg and Hohenwerfen Castle.
The region is great to explore by rental car. With an extra day, you could drop south into the Austrian Alps to see absolutely incredible scenery. The back into Munich from Tirol is very easy.
