I am traveling with 3 adult children on the Danube Waltz Viking River Cruise. We can on take 1 more excursion and are
wondering if Salzburg or Hallstatt is the best option. Also, great train schedule from Linz. Has anyone had that experience??
I did the Viking Rhine and also we've done a RS tour. Other than that we are independent travelers. My thought is Hallstatt is just a day trip and it can be quite crowded. One thing I have observed, is that for super crowded places going with a tour removes the stress of it from me. Tours also, sometimes, have strategies/tricks for managing that a private traveler may not. So, if it were me, I'd do Hallstatt.
To me, Salzburg needs about two full days to explore if not more. I would save that to do on your own, before or after your cruise or at another time.
Are you arriving Europe a few days before the cruise to adjust and get over any jet lag?
In which town does your cruise ship moor when you intend going for an excursion, Passau or Linz?
At what time you can alight and at what time do you have to board again?
