Must see in Innsbruck

We have been to Europe a few times, but this will be our first time in Innsbruck. I would appreciate any ideas of what we should not miss seeing. We will be taking the train from Milan, and spending 2 nights. Thanks.

I would go 40 minutes further and base myself in Seefeld in Tirol. Beautiful town in a cradle of mountains. Mittenwald is a worthy afternoon trip. I guess to me Innsbruck is just so-so, in my opinion.

the charm of Innsbruck is in its location, not so much anything there. There is a Olympic ski jump and related things, and a few museums, but I don't recall much else.

Hi Diane,

I think the old town in general is worth seeing. We also liked the Hofkirche, Schloss Ambras and really enjoyed the Nordkettenbahn trip right from outside the pedestrian zone. The alpine scenery here is beautiful.

My vote would also go to Seefeld-Mittenwald.

I spent 2 nights in the Innsbruck area several years ago and spent the day going over Brenner Pass to Italy, but considering you are coming from Milan, that's probably not an interest for you.

Hall is a short train or bus ride down the Inn from Innsbruck and has a fairly interesting old town.

I should have mentioned this in my first post, but we have stayed in Hall in Tirol, at the Gasthof Badl, for all our visits that included Innsbruck, for a total of 18 nights during trips in 01, '03, '05, '10 and '13.

We already have our room booked for Innsbruck. If we start out early from Milan, we could probably see some of the sights in Innsbruck when we arrive, and take a day trip the next day to some of the areas suggested. Salzburg is next on our agenda, with Hallstatt following for a night. We end our trip with Munich and Berlin. We start our trip with the Cinque Terre area and are looking forward to decompressing from our flight there. In the past, we were in Munich and Milan. It will be fun to see the new places. Europe is the favorite place for me and my spouse to vacation. Thanks for the suggestions.

The cenotaph of Emperor Maximilian I is the highlight of the city. It's one of the most remarkable structures of the Northern Renaissance: here are some pics
The cathedral and the church in Wilten, a suburb, are beautiful baroque churches. Ambras castle, also a bit outside, offers very interesting museums, among them one of Europes best armories.

I don't think there is enough to see in Hall to warrant an overnight stay, but if you find accommodations in Hall for less than in Innsbruck, it's close enough to Innsbruck to make it a reasonable alternative.

I went to college in Innsbruck, and from my dorm room I could see 50 peaks over 10,000' in elevation. The valley there is at 5,000' and it's just between 1 and 2 miles wide, with huge mountains on each side of that valley. Scenery is incredible.

And it's a region that's best seen with a rental car. Do a one day auto rental, and you can ramble from village to village up on the mountain. In a day, you could also take in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Fuessen and Neuschwainstein and back. Or, you could see Salzburg and back in one day. It's just a great central location to do day trips from.
