Mushroom hunting in Bavaria

At the end of June we are on an 8 day Rick Steves tour of Munich, Salzburg, and Viennna. I would like to spend part of one day searching for mushrooms. Does anyone know of a good pocket guide to edible mushrooms of that region?

In which region you will have a day off for searching mushrooms? By the way, this is very dependent on the weather. Should it be very dry, not much mushrooms can be found.

Looks like you have free afternoons on day 4 and 5. But you would need to rent a car to get out of the town and into a wooded areas. And would need an IDP to drive legally. But it must be an area where the public are allowed, and where mushroom hunting is permitted. I have no idea how you would go about finding such places. June may be too early, and the weather may not be conducive to their growth in the short time you have.

I don't know of any pocket guides, because good mushroom spots are top secret. June is too early - the best time for mushrooms starts at the end of summer and continues into autumn. Generally speaking, you'll find at least some mushrooms in every forest in Bavaria. The really good ones, like porcini mushrooms, aren't so easy to find these days, and as I said, the spots are top secret.

Depending on the area, they say you're not allowed to take more than 2 kg. In some areas, you need a permit from the municipality, etc. But if you're just taking a small basketful for fun, no one will care. It's just that some people have overdone the mushroom picking. Especially those who want to sell them at a high price.

I live on the eastern outskirts of Munich, surrounded by forest (a commercial forest). The mushrooms I can find there aren't particularly sought-after edible mushrooms. If you drive south out of the city, you'd have a better chance of finding something in any forest. However, it's really best to go there by car.

Thanks for the helpful responses!
I won't have much opportunity to cook anything, so my searching will be just for fun and memories. I doubt we will rent a car just for me to do this. It would be fun if I found others who would be willing to let me join them in their searches.
Gruß Gott.

Again, people in this part of the world never tell their mushroom secrets nor would they bring a stranger along. Good luck.
