Hi there - I’m going on the Germany, Austria and Switzerland tour in September this year. I’d love to see historical antique instruments played during the classical era. Any recommendations on where I should go?
If you are going to Vienna, look at this museum https://www.khm.at/en/visit/collections/collection-of-historic-musical-instruments/
It’s part of Hofburg Palace complex. I’ll try to find time when I visit Vienna in June. Nice’s Musee du Palais Lascaris’ instrument collection was very interesting.
Top of the list is the collection in Vienna - https://www.khm.at/en/visit/collections/collection-of-historic-musical-instruments/ The German National Museum in Nürnberg also has an extensive collection - https://www.gnm.de/ Also , in Salzburg , The Mozart Geburtshaus has some of the earliest pianoforte instruments , and as a comparison to see the height of the evolution of the piano , go to the Bosendorfer showroom in Vienna , just behind the Musikverein and feast your eyes and ears on a Bosendorfer 290 extended range Grand Piano . Give this a listen here - https://youtu.be/LDALaf-_65k
Thank you everyone!!
The German National Museum in Nürnberg also has an extensive collection - https://www.gnm.de/
Steven is right - I saw that collection and it was wonderful. Another museum that has an incredible collection of musical instructions is the Museum für Kuntz und Gewerbe (Museum of Art and Design) in Hamburg. I was in awe of some of those pieces - gorgeous!
Markneukirchen!
Leipzig also has a very good museum of musical instruments ..... and indeed lots of music in general.
