Hello - my wife and two daughters (7 and 10) are flying into Munich 3/21/26 and will be flying out of Vienna 3/28, taking the train to link between the cities.
Background - we love history and hiking (and food!). We recently did 10 days in Switzerland so the alps/mountains are not a huge priority.
Current plan is to spend Saturday/Sunday/Monday in Munich, take the train to Salzburg, hop off for a quick city walk and dinner and then get in late to Vienna. We would then have Wednesday/Thursday/Friday in Vienna.
For Vienna, we are thinking of planning our 3 days as follows. I would love some first hand criticism/suggestions/affirmation. First time in Austria - I am very excited.
Day 1
Morning: Haus der Musik – interactive sound and music museum; Time Travel Vienna – immersive historical experience with multimedia and animatronics
Midday: Lunch near Stephansplatz – grab-and-go or sit-down options nearby; Walk through Heldenplatz, see the Hofburg exterior, and visit the Imperial Crypt
Afternoon: Head to Prater Amusement Park
Day 2
Melk Abbey, Danube River, Krems (either an organized tour or self planned via bus/train)
Day 3
Morning–Early Afternoon: Visit Schönbrunn Palace; Grand Tour with audioguide; Explore the Maze & Gardens; Visit the Tiergarten (Zoo) – oldest zoo in the world, great for kids
Optional (if time/energy allows): Afternoon visit to Seegrotte Hinterbrühl; Underground lake & former WWII aircraft factory
