Munich/Vienna Trip

Hello - my wife and two daughters (7 and 10) are flying into Munich 3/21/26 and will be flying out of Vienna 3/28, taking the train to link between the cities.

Background - we love history and hiking (and food!). We recently did 10 days in Switzerland so the alps/mountains are not a huge priority.

Current plan is to spend Saturday/Sunday/Monday in Munich, take the train to Salzburg, hop off for a quick city walk and dinner and then get in late to Vienna. We would then have Wednesday/Thursday/Friday in Vienna.

For Vienna, we are thinking of planning our 3 days as follows. I would love some first hand criticism/suggestions/affirmation. First time in Austria - I am very excited.

Day 1

Morning: Haus der Musik – interactive sound and music museum; Time Travel Vienna – immersive historical experience with multimedia and animatronics

Midday: Lunch near Stephansplatz – grab-and-go or sit-down options nearby; Walk through Heldenplatz, see the Hofburg exterior, and visit the Imperial Crypt

Afternoon: Head to Prater Amusement Park

Day 2

Melk Abbey, Danube River, Krems (either an organized tour or self planned via bus/train)

Day 3

Morning–Early Afternoon: Visit Schönbrunn Palace; Grand Tour with audioguide; Explore the Maze & Gardens; Visit the Tiergarten (Zoo) – oldest zoo in the world, great for kids

Optional (if time/energy allows): Afternoon visit to Seegrotte Hinterbrühl; Underground lake & former WWII aircraft factory

No comments about your Vienna stay, but I must respond to the idea of taking 7 and 10 year old children to Dachau. PLEASE do not do this thing. They are too young. This visit is hard enough for adults to process, let alone small children.

A better idea would be to spend the whole day in Salzburg. There's more than enough to do in a morning and afternoon.

I'd consider the Natural History Museum. Kiddos IME love them, and Vienna's is quite good.

I’m a mom and live in Vienna. First, Salzburg is amazing - fortress, Hellbrunn Palace (truck fountains), Mozart, Sound of Music. Please consider spending a couple of days in Salzburg.

For Vienna, you are doing way too much on Day 1. Haus Der Musik is ok - not my favorite. The Time Travel thing is really silly, I’d skip that. The crypt isn’t what I’d choose either. I also kind of hate the Prater Amusement park - it’s very tacky, like a bad state fair. I’d recommend instead the Wien Museum, going up the tower at Stephansplatz, Natural History Museum.

Day 2 may be boring for children.

Day 3 at Schönbrunn makes sense. But the Seegrotte? That’s so random - no one does that.

Thank you Emily - staying an extra day in Salzburg is definitely something we are toying with. We were hoping to limit our lodging to 2 hotels being that its a fairly quick trip, but may be worth the extra packing/unpacking.
