We will be flying into Munich Airport on a weekend in late August, then traveling onto Hallstatt for a short stay before heading to Salzburg. We need advice in regard to the easiest and fastest way to get to Hallstatt via train, bus, or train and bus. There are many choices, and we need specific help in choosing the itinerary. Plus, should we reserve now or wait until arrival to Munich. Thanks so much!

Take an express train from Munich to Salzburg. Check what is the best connection from Munich's airport for changing to the train to Salzburg.
Note that due to track repairs trains will be replaced by buses between Attnang-Puchheim and Bad Ischl / Hallstatt ending September 10, 2023. Therefore Hallstatt is reachable by bus only, i.e. the ferry to the train station across the lake won't operate.
There are two routes from Salzburg to Hallstatt:
1: Salzburg to Attnang-Puchheim (express train), Attnang-Puchheim to Hallstatt (local train, replaced by bus).
2: Salzburg to Bad Ischl (bus #150), Bad Ischl to Hallstatt (local train, replaced by bus).
Normally the travel time is about the same for both options, but I am not sure whether this holds for the train replacement service. Option 2 is more scenic than option 1. If you choose option 2 and have enough time, I recommend a short visit of Bad Ischl. Walk to the famous "Zauner" café and pastry store and buy the unique "Zauner-Stollen".
