Multi-city trip with kids. Couple questions...

Hello,
We're a couple traveling with 2 kids (7 &9) in July and would like some opinions on a couple things:
Our itinerary:
Day 1-3: Vienna
Day 4: Travel to Bad Ischl/Halstadt
Day 5: Halstadt
Day 6: Travel to Salzburg
Day 7-10: Salzburg

Q1: We're planning on trains, but open to driving to/from Halstadt. Is the drive worth the trouble of getting a car?
Q2: How far in advance should we get train tickets? Is a day or two in advance fine or should we reserve sooner? We're pretty flexible overall.

Thanks!

It's unclear whether you intend to stay overnight in Bad Ischl. I wouldn't do one-night stays in Bad Ischl and Hallstatt - pick one or the other. We stayed in Bad Ischl and took the train to Hallstatt for a day trip - very easy. I certainly wouldn't have bothered with a car. We were traveling in May and didn't get train tickets ahead, just when we were ready to hop on the train. Hallstatt was very busy in May and will probably be more so in July, so Bad Ischl in some ways might be a more pleasant place to stay. However, I think staying overnight in Hallstatt would be fun, too. It's bound to be quieter after the daytrippers have left.

Thanks Janet,
We're staying in Bad Ischl both nights so we can spend a full day in Halstadt. Sounds like trains are the way to go.
For Vienna-to-Bad Ischl or Bad Ischl-to-Salzburg, are we OK purchasing tickets a few days before?

None of Austria's daytime trains require reservations, so you can always buy a ticket and get on the train. Note the spelling of Hallstatt when buying the tickets, otherwise you could end up in Germany.

Also, it's often recommended (including by RS, I believe) to take the bus rather than the train from Bad Ischl to Salzburg. That's what we did, and it was a nice trip.
