We will be in vienna the second weekend of sept and would like to attend a Mozart concert". Would the mozart orchestra at musickverein be appropriate? I want a good performance, not just a tourist trap. Any other suggestions?
Tourist trap...high cost for mediocre performance.
Not sure of your dates but here a a few that should be great.

AVOID ANY CONCERTS DONE IN PERIOD COSTUMES!!
They all basically play the same repetoire that any talented amateur or student ensemble can manage competently, period costumes or not: Vivaldi's Four Seasons, Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Strauss waltzes, overtures from Rossini, etc. If you really want to be challenged or hear world-class performances , you have to pay the big bucks for the Vienna Philharmonic or some of the smaller professional organizations.
Surprisingly, The Cleveland Orchestra is in residence at the Musikverein in September. The Vienna Philharmonic is on vacation ( I presume) after being in Salzburg for the month of August.
Tom,
The visiting orchestras are not of the same pap as the usual ones that always perform there. Two I recommended are not the standard fare at all. The piano concert at St Peterskirche is, though not by a major player, acceptable and a nice evening. Even the free concerts at the churches are very well done.
According to Alex, the Musickverein would not be appropriate:
"The Vienna Mozart Orchestra plays in Vienna concerts with internationally renowned singers and soloists - all in magnificent historical costumes and wigs and creates a special atmosphere in Vienna's largest and most famous Concert halls, like State Opera, Musikverein Golden Hall, Hofburg and Konzerthaus." I don't agree.
In my experience, you have to order your tickets early --- however, it's Vienna, and I would take a concert anyplace in Vienna, even a concert with student performers, over nothing at all. .
This is confusing to me. I want to order my tickets now for a concert in Vienna and maybe a concert in Salzburg. I would like to hear the vienna boys choir and see the horses. Without spending a small fortune. We will be part of a My Way Tour so maybe is should jut call a RS travel consultant. What do you think?
The mozart orchestra at musikeevein sounded like a good choice but now I am concerned. I don't want to go to the Cleveland orchestra in Vienna, even though I know they are great.
Elaine,
If you paid attention to my post I never said that any venue at the Musikverein was not worth it. I stated the costumed regular performances at the Hall were not worth it. One of the concerts I listed is the Munich Philharmoniker, which is not a student orchestra, or a costumed farce. They are playing at the Musiikverein and would be a good venue.
If it is your choice to see any concert, just because it is in Vienna, be my guest.
Okay, which is the better venue, Musikverein or Konzerthaus. St. Stephens or St. Charles church?
And is the Circus Roncalli worth seeing. Must I purchase tickets in advance for these concerts?
Thanks for your help.
I don't know about the Circus. As to the music venues, which ones suit your musical taste?
I have looked at what is available while we are there - many choices. I want good quality in the performance and a beautiful venue. Suggestions about the ones I listed?
I can only tell you what I would choose based on what music I would like to hear. I would go to Munich Philharmoniker at the Musikverien. That being said the program is Richard Strauss and Bruckner, if you find you like those composers then there you have it.
If you want Mozart I would go and see the performance at St Peterskirche.
I will say that we did go to a circus in Vienna one year--not the one you mentioned--and it was really fun. Personally I would go to that as well just to experience the whole thing.
That's correct...the Vienna Philharmonic has been on tour this year. In March the Wiener Philharmoniker were in SF, actually across the bay in Berkeley. Unless you plan your visit in Vienna to correspond with the performance season of a particular orchester in Vienna, seeing student performers playing light stuff like Mozart, etc might be better than nothing. I would also reasonably assume since it is Vienna their level is going to be more than one normally expects of student performers.
I have been to Circus Roncalli and plan to go again in the fall. Big Top, small venue, interesting and unique acts. My son loved it.
Looks like you have some good feedback. Happy planning!
