We will be spending 3-4 nights in the Wachua Valley region in late October 2026. We will be arriving by train from the Vienna airport. We hope to hike the Dornstein - Krems hike (any thoughts on which direction?), a river cruise, the abbey, and wine....lots of wine. We're very spontaneous travelers. Any thoughts on which town to home base in?
We bought a book recently called "Home Base Hiking Europe" by Cassandra Overby (forward by Rick Steves). It features the Wachua Valley. They recommend basing in Dornstein although mentioning that Krems is another good base. The hike you mentioned is in the book, and they start it in Krems. It's described as 4.5 hrs, moderate, 8.3 miles, 470 m gain, 461 m loss, start at Krems Stadtpark bus stop in Krems, end Kremser Tor trailhead in Durnstein.
