Melk in early Dec.

Appears that everything is closed in Melk in late Nov. and Dec. Is it worth going there?

Everything can't be closed as it is a town and people live there!

Abbey - http://www.stiftmelk.at/englisch/Opening%20times%2014.pdf

No river cruising, though; no biking; no grapes; no apricot blossoms and no sunny walks through charming Wachau villages; probably limited dining choices. Honestly, not the best time of year for this trip.

There is River Cruising – that’s how we saw Melk – in December on a Christmas Market River Cruise on the Danube. We spent ½ a day there – we toured the Abbey (as above) and really enjoyed it – it is still an Abbey w/Monks and a school. The Church inside was stunning – done in dark wood & real gold. The Abbey dates back to the 1100s – lots of interesting history inside. Highly recommend a tour if they are offered. We walked through the town on the way back to the boat. It is a very small town – several shops that were open. Melk is known for Apricots, so we bought some Apricot Liquor & Chocolate Covered Apricots. There were no Christmas Markets there – but we enjoyed 4hrs or so in the Abbey and town. If you’re interested in seeing the Abbey, I’d say spend the morning there. If not, there are lots of other great towns & Christmas Markets nearby. Someone listed the website for the Abbey above & you can see photos and read reviews on TripAdvisor.
