Melk cruise daytrip itinerary/suggestion nearby departing from Vienna?

My wife and I are going to Vienna in 5 more days and will want to go to a cruise in Melk.

I have been hearing quite a few ways which I am not sure which one to go for and quite confused.

One says that take the train to Melk from Vienna and then have a walk and then take the cruise to Krems.

Then take the train back to Vienna or something.

Do you have any suggestion or good experience? My wife heard that the cruise is amazing since the cruise goes through the vineyard, then the farm, then the castle etc. Is that true? I also heard some say its quite boring.

We are checking in at 10am @ Vienna (drop the baggage) after taking the train so we have pretty much the whole day to explore the day trip!

Thanks in advance

You are going to be in Vienna in 5 days - is that correct?

Sadly, you are too early in the season for a Wachau cruise as these do not start for several weeks.

The cruise is fine, but I wouldn't describe it as amazing. I prefer to go to the Wachau and hike.

My recommendation (given numerous times on this site) is to take the train to Melk, boat to Duernstein, bus to Krems, train to Vienna.

MELK: After 54 EU vacation trips, the Abby Church at Melk gets my vote for the top sight in Europe.

If you get a cruise to Melk, it's a major climb up to the Abbey from the river or take a taxi from town center near the dock.

You can book day trips to tour the Abbey. Viator is the only company I know, but there are others. Make sure the tour route follows the river to see the Wachau scenery, and a stop in Krems or Durnstein is worthwhile.

The standard Abbey tour wastes too much time in the religious museum. Forge ahead of the tour to the banquet room, library, and church. My wife goes stir crazy after 45 minutes in the church. I think I could spend hours there.
