Melk as overnight biking stop

While the Wachau Valley has been well-discussed here, I have a question. We have one unscheduled day in Austria next month and want to do some biking along the Danube. We are trying to decide which would be easier logistically: take an early train from Vienna to Melk, bike to Krems, then return to Vienna that night via train. OR take the train to Melk but after biking Melk to Krems, return via bus to Melk and stay overnight there (which would involve transporting luggage to a hotel in Melk before biking, obviously). The question arises, in part, because we will be going on to Hallstatt the next day. From what I see, with transfers it would take four hours to get to Hallstatt from Melk via train vs. 3 ½ hours from Vienna. Is the difference/hassle significant? (We will have already seen the Melk Abbey on our RS tour, so that is not a factor in whether we stay in Melk.) Thanks in advance for insights.

That is obviously the much better choice.
(Saturday and Sunday there is even a direct train from Vienna to Hallstatt.)
