I am driving from Vienna to Melk for a 1 night stay.....Any interesting / historical hotels in that area
I will be off to Halstatt the following day

If you drive the straight route via free-way A1 there is not so much choice. Should you want to stay right in Melk, that might be a nice place: http://www.hotel-wachau.at
If you drive the scenic route via B3 along the northern embankment of the River Danube, i.e. the Wachau valley, there is much more choice, albeit not so close to Melk.

I just got back from a 2 week road-trip through Austria. We did visit the Milk Abbey. The town of Melk by itself is quite quaint and nice, but we stayed at Hotel Rose in Maria Taferl. What a delightful little place. Also, you might want to go there first and see that church BEFORE you get to Milk Abbey. Thoroughly recommend a stay in Maria Taferl. I think Milk is about a 20 min drive.
