Mauthausen Concentration Camp Private Car Tour from Salzburg

Hi Everyone,
We're anxious to see the Mauthausen Memorial and tour the camp on a day trip from Salzburg next month. We came across a day long tour from Salzburg (on Tripadvisor) that sounds good except for the pricey $645 USD cost.
Has anyone had any experience with this tour? I know that the train trip from Salzburg is not bad. It looks like a trip from Salzburg to Linz, transfer to another train from Linz to Mauthausen and then a taxi to the Memorial. To anyone's knowledge, is there any reason that I'd be better off with the tour from Salzburg?
Thanks in advance.

This price is egregious, targeted at gullible tourists.

The best way to go there from Salzburg by public transport is taking an express train to Linz, and then bus #362 directly to the Mauthausen Memorial.

E.g., train WB 907, departing from Salzburg at 7:52am, arriving in Linz at 9:04am, bus 362 departing at 9:15am, arriving at the Mauthausen Menorial at 9:48am.

The bus terminal is directly in front of the main train station in Linz. If you feel uncomfortable with this short layover, you must take an eralier train.

Agreed, that is an outrageous price. Maybe you want to just rent a car yourself for the day? The roads in Austria are great. If not, the train option is fine.

That said, the Dachau Memorial outside of Munich is the same distance and probably easier to navigate. The Mauthausen Memorial is also not presented in an appropriate way, in my opinion. Austria still (after all of these years) struggles to admit their role in the murders of millions. My two cents.

I think fewer people visit Weimar, Germany than visit Salzburg. But Buchenwald takes very little time to get to, on a city bus, single regular fare. It’s quite a chilling visit. Weimar has a lot of history.

The thing that has stayed with me from Mauthausen, are the many personal memorials for the Polish boy scouts (harcerze) and scout leaders who were imprisoned and died there.

...the pricey $645 USD cost...

That's not pricey. That's obscene! Please feel free to pick the brains of people on this site as Mauthausen can be seen for a &*^! sight less. Please let us know what you decide.

Thanks very much everyone for your gracious help-I'm so glad that I asked. It will be the train and bus and I'm looking forward to it. We'll make this trip in late May and I'll report back on how it went.
Thanks again
