Maria Altmann address

I am in Vienna and would love to see Maria Altmann’s childhood home, part of the story from The Woman in Gold, the story of Klimt’s painting stolen from her family by the Nazis. The Tourist informatiin office in Vienna was of no help!

Maria Altmann was a somewhat distant relative of the subject , Adele Bloch Bauer , who died in 1925 . As you may know , the painting lives in NYCity , at The Neue Galerie . Klimt's Villa is in Penzing , in the northwest of town , and is open to visitors . Two other places to suit your interest are the Klimt gallery at The Belevedere , and The Leopold Museum in town . For an in depth analysis of Klimt's work , particularly his gold period , 1905-1908 , Carl Schorske's seminal work " Fin de Siecle Vienna " is superlative , the chapter " Gustav Klimt : Painting and the Crisis of The Liberal Ego " will shed much light on the painting and what informed it . https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fin-de-si%C3%A8cle_Vienna

Thanks. We did visit the Klimt gallery at the Belvedere. Do you know how I can find the address to Maria Altmann’s childhood home in Vienna?

Considering, in all fairness , that she was actually a minor participant in this tale and it's a long time ago , I doubt that that information would be available . I , for one , have no idea , Happy Hunting

According to Lehmann's Address Book of Vienna (published yearly between 1859 and 1942) the father of Maria Altmann (née Bloch), Gustav Bloch, a lawyer, lived in the 1st city borough at Stubenbastei 2.

This address was also mentioned here: www.bslaw.com/altmann/Klimt/Summary.pdf

According to the Viennese Culture Cadaster is the house, built 1892, still there, renovated though, i.e. it looks different now.
