March 25-30 - Munich, Salzburg, Vienna

Hi everyone! i love lurking on this forum and thought I would ask for some help. I'm an American currently doing an Erasmus Mundus masters program in Europe, and I'll be studying in Vienna in the spring semester. We have two weeks off for spring break, and my dad is going to come visit. He lands morning of March 25 in Munich and leaves Sunday morning from Vienna. Here's my stab at an itinerary:
edited
Monday March 25 - arrival in Munich, spend day/night
Tuesday March 26 - Munich day/night
Weds March 27 - leave Munich for Salzburg in morning, spend night there
Thurs March 28 - Salzburg day/night
Fri March 29 - leave Salzburg for Vienna in morning, spend afternoon/night there
Saturday March 30: Vienna day/night
Sunday March 31: trip ends

I might go to Munich a day early (Sunday March 24) and spend the night there by myself just so I don't have to take a really early train on Monday. I know we could easily spend a full week in all three places probably, but he really wants to see Vienna because that's where I'll be living, and neither of us have been to Germany or Austria, so we're trying to cover some ground.

We're both very active and like to walk a lot, and I personally am an urban cycling/public transit nerd (the masters is in urban studies). Would love recommendations/advice for:
- areas to stay in/hotels in Munich and Salzburg (he'll just stay near my apartment in Vienna when we're there)
- food and drink in all places
- activities in all places minus art museums (sorry)
- anything regarding the proposed itinerary! the only thing that is booked is his flight that lands in Munich on March 25.

... he really wants to see Vienna ...

Given that short timeframe just skip Munich and Salzburg for a longer stay in Vienna.

It doesn't make sense to skip Munich since he is flying there, but it might make sense to skip Salzburg. This trip is for your Dad and I suggest giving him enough time to really see and enjoy where you will be living is probably more important.

Everything depends on what you and your dad want to see. If Salzburg is important to you and/or your dad, see it. Is there anything in particular you want to see there? If you just want to catch a flavor of it, you could catch the train to Salzburg, store your bags in the lockers in the train station while you wander the city for a bit, and then catch an afternoon train on to Vienna.

If you make a stop at Salzburg: The walk from the train station to the old town is nice if you walk along the river -- gives a nice view of the fortress sitting above the Old Town as you walk in that direction. Just walking around Salzburg is fun to me. The fortress is cool if you are into medieval fortresses. The art museum you really must see is... just kidding. For German/Austrian food, the Augustiner Bräustübl opens at 2:30 or 3:00 pm depending on the day. For non-German/Austrian food, consider the Afro Cafe; daily lunch specials + quite good curry fish dish + best falafel I've ever had. I like to stay at the Gästehaus im Priesterseminar -- simple rooms for a reasonable price in an atmospheric priest seminary across the river from the Old Town.
