I have 3 -4 favorites for myself in the city. However, I am hoping to find a new spot or two that Viennese choose. Something that is evocative of Vienna or Austrian food in general. Thanks in advance!

9DeLau - yes, Chinese, but it is fantastic!
Hmmm, I can't stand Salm Bräu. 100% tourists and questionable food, in my opinion.
Stemen - you'll find that the look of Otto-Bauer-Gasse has changed in a positive way, but will likely drive out the stalwarts like this place.
Salm has a special place in my heart. It was an oasis after a rather hectic/near-awful day. Agree on the tourist factor but I find the food and drink to be good value for money.
What do you mean about the change on Otto-Bauer-Gasse? I was there just 18 months ago. There seemed to be a few more spots that were vacant and some places along the way toward Zieglergasse that were more, I don't know, "modern"? Hopefully less graffiti.
Otto-Bauer-Gasse is now pedestrianized and new places are popping up which might drive up rent prices.
Oh - that is good news (pedestrianized) as the traffic and parking there was horrible. However, if rents increase it surely must mean that by eliminating autos that there will be more people frequenting the area from those strolling on Mariahilferstraße.
One of my favorites is Buffet Trzesniewski that serves miniature beers and delicious open faced sandwiches. You can ask for an English menu or just point to what looks good. One of the seven chains is located in near St. Stephan’s Cathedral.
Another idea is visiting a wine garden.
Trzesniewski - there are 7 locations, not 3. Lines? I’ve never seen lines. Stephansplatz is not at all close to the Ringstrasse. If you like egg salad on white bread, then go for it!
Franciszek Trześniewski invented fast food in Vienna about 120 years ago, and it is considered still the best among locals.

At their central place near St. Stephen's Cathedral, after more then 115 years, they managed to open on Sundays, too.
here 3 typical Viennese restaurants:
Gasthaus Kopp
Gasthaus Hansy
Zum Nussgart'l
here 3 typical Viennese restaurants:
In Vienna the term "restaurant" refers to places of a somewhat higher standard.
Even these 3 places refer to themselves as "Gasthaus". Other names would be "Wirtshaus" or most common in Viennese language "Beisl".
