Long ago (about 40 years) the Last time I was in Innsbruck (as a young kid) my family stayed in an old hotel on a road leading up from Innsbruck to Igls. It looked like a traditional old Building with a balcony and all the charm you could ask for.
Iirc you could look down on the valley bellow and see the train track and one of the tunnels for the highway.
The place was actual owned at the time by a lady that was a professor in I think California. And some of her students worked there in the Summer. This was a year after the Winter Olympics and they said one of the networks rented the place out for them. And you could see the Olympic ski jump in the distance.
Now I highly doubt the place still is a hotel but I wonder if the building still exists?
I have tried looking on Google and I think maybe I found the right place but the views are not great.
I am working on a trip back this fall and I was thinking I would try to drive past the place and see if it still exists. As that was the last big family vacation with my sister and brother before they went there separate ways.
I know this is not much to go on but any help would be appreciated.
There was once an hotel in front of the church in Vill, but now it is closed and only the main hall is occasionally used for local meetings. I seem to remember the name as Gasthof Traube but I am not sure. Hotel Turmbichl in Vill, on the back of the church, is still open.
As I spend my vacation time in Igls every year I am very familiar with the road to/from Innsbruck - I could tell I have driven it hundreds of times, but these are the only hotels that are directly on that road, and they do not look over the valley.
At a lower elevation there is the Gasthaus Bretterkeller - I never attended them, they look to be more a restaurant than an hotel.
The chances are that if it was 40 plus years ago, the small hotel does not exist anymore. I say this based on my experience of staying in small hotels or Pensionen in 1973, 1977 in Munich, Paris, Salzburg, and Berlin. In 2009 and 2010 I went to the Salzburg, Munich locations....all gone. Actually in Berlin and Paris these small hotels/Pension were gone by 1995 or earlier when I went to check. Likewise in Vienna with the hostel I stayed at in 1971 on Pulverturmgasse...gone.
That might be different in Innsbruck, it may be still there. Don't surprised if it isn't.
Last year my husband and his son stayed in a hotel near Grindelwald. They were the fourth and fifth generation of their family to stay there since the 1950s, so definately possible. The hotel was also in the same family and gave them a free congratulations drink😁
I remember Gasthaus Bretterkeller and a power plant as the only things on the Iglerstrasse between the motorway crossing and Vill. There is the Bergisel sky jump but it is on the other side of the valley. You can see the motorway tunnels and the train line from some points, but I do not remember any building. Once you are in Vill you are likely too high in elevation to see the railway, but may be there are some vantage points on the outskirts of the village. Again, no buildings between Vill and Igls, from some points in Igls you can see the motorway but not the railway.
