Early in May we will be in Vienna with 2 older relatives. They will need to go from our lodging to the airport to catch a 7:30 a.m. flight for the States. Can anyone recommend a smaller hotel, pension, b&b which would either be close to the airport or offer some sort of reliable transportation?

Certainly do not stay near the airport, stay in the center and reserve a taxi with Redcab: http://red-cab.at/
They are wonderful and reliable...reserve online and it will run about 29 Euro.

What Alex said. The airport is only 20 minutes by car from city center and at that hour there will be no traffic. There is no advantage to staying near to the airport in a smaller B&B - it will still take at least 10 minutes to get to the airport from the B&B, so an overall savings of 10 minutes plus checking in and out of another, new hotel just doesn't add up.
Take red cab from the city.
