Lodging in Salzburg

We are a family of 6 (3 adults & 3 children), and are planning a quick 2 night visit to Salzburg on our way to Venice. Does anyone have a suggestion as to where we should stay - preferably a 3 bedroom apartment, good location but not too expensive? I would also appreciate any suggestions as to what we should do. We want to see Sound of Music sites, but aren't sure what else. Thank you for any help you can give us.

Have you visited the website of the Salzburg tourist office?

Aside from SOM, the real highlights are the Hohensalzburg fortress and Hellbrunn, which the kids with both like.

Thank you so much for these suggestions. I have added both to my "itinerary."

The Panorama 1A SOM tour that includes a ride out into the countryside takes about 4 hours. Two nights means only one full day. You can easily fill in the other half of the day before or after the SOM walking around old town and the Festung Hohensalzburg. Our hotel was centrally located only a 1 KM walk to the train in one direction and 1 KM walk to old town Altes Rathaus in the other direction via the pedestrian only Linzer Gasse street.

neuwirtgut.at is just outside town, on the light rail line. Highly recommended
