Lodging in Hallstatt

We will be in Hallstatt one night in October. Apparently the day we will be there (a weekday) is popular and I have found that my 3 top choices for lodging are full (Pension Gruner Anger, Pension Sarstein and Seehotel Gruner Baun). I'm considering Guesthaus Seewirt Zauer and Heritage Hotel. Does have an opinion about these 2 places or have other suggestions. As I said, we will be there for just one night.

We've stayed at the Zauner and it is a decent property but no lake views. They have a great restaurant.

You might check the Gasthof Simony. It's pretty basic in a shabby chic way but there are great lake views. If you do get a rez there, ask for a balcony room.

We stayed at the Gasthoff Simony two years ago and like it. Center of town. Room was very large and clean. They were cash only, so no credit cards. Happy travels,

I experienced the same problem, so I booked a room in Obertraun for half the price and free breakfast and excellent reviews a short ferry ride away for September 2015 at the Obertraunhof.

I really like the Hotel Grüner Baum. Here is the description below from Rick's book. They have a nice restaurant as well.
$$$ Hotel Grüner Baum, on the other side of the church from the main boat dock, has a great location, fronting Market Square and overlooking the lake in back. The owner, Monika, moved here from Vienna and renovated this stately--but still a bit creaky--old hotel with urban taste. Its 30 rooms have classy furnishings and new hardwood floors (Db-€158-213, price depends on view, 8 percent discount with this book when you book directly with hotel, extra bed-€52, family rooms, elevator, Wi-Fi, laundry service-€16, closed Nov, 20 yards from boat dock, tel. 06134/82630, www.gruenerbaum.cc, contact@gruenerbaum.cc).

We spent three nights at the Gasthof Simony in September, 2014, and I would NOT recommend it even for one night. It is run down and in need of much refurbishment. The hotel's management, the same people who own the Braugasthof Lobisser, have chosen to NOT fix things that break. Our toilet had no lid, and the light fixture in the bathroom was broken and about to fall off the wall. When we told management, they knew of the problems, but did nothing to fix them during our stay. The Simony IS in a great location. But, I would definitely look elsewhere.

Sara,

Just curious, where did you end up staying?

We've stayed at Gastof Simony and loved it! It is old and creaky, but full of character and very friendly owner.

I realize Sara has already taken her trip, but in case anyone else is considering - I went on the Rick Steves My Way Alpine Europe tour last summer and they put us up in Seehotel Gruner Baum. It was by far the nicest hotel in which we stayed on the tour - perfect location, very comfortable, and spacious rooms. It also had one of my favorite features that I've seen in a European hotel: an international power outlet! Its layout allowed for all kinds of different formats to be comfortably plugged in.

The only downside for me was that it was really hot the day that I was in Hallstatt and the hotel had neither air conditioning (no surprise there) nor fans of any kind. So it was sweltering in my room and I left my window open all night during a massive thunderstorm to get some relief! But I imagine that it's not really an issue the vast majority of the time and I didn't hold it against them.
