Local transportation in St. Gilgen, St. Wolfgang (bus to hotel options)

Plotting a future trip with a friend. I’d like for us to stay in St. Gilgen or St. Wolfgang for 2-3 nights. We wouldn’t have a car (in all likelihood), and would take a bus from Salzburg. In looking at lodging options I am imagining transportation possibilities from the Busbahn, unless we’re lucky enough to find a place within an easy walking distance.

So my question…what are local transportation options in the two towns for getting from the bus to a hotel/Airbnb? Taxis, Uber, other? How this works may determine lodging choices.

Also, it appears from what I’ve read that arriving in St. Gilgen from Salzburg may be easier than arriving in St. Wolfgang. True?

What’s the situation “from the ground “?

Thanks!

Someone can probably give you real-time info. I will just share that we stayed in St. Wolfgang - loved it! We took the bus from Salzburg to St. Gilgen, walked down the hill to catch the boat over to St. Wolfgang. We stayed at lovely Hotel Cortisen am See on the edge of the village.

I'm looking out of the window of my AirBnb in St. Gilgen as I write this (it's raining).

Both Sankt Gilgen and St. Wolfgang are very small. You just walk. Everything is within easy walking distance. That said, the 150 bus from Salzburg makes two stops in Sankt Gilgen, so one stop might be closer than the other to your accommodation. For St. Wolfgang, there is no direct bus from Salzburg and you will need to make a change. It takes considerably more time to reach St. Wolfgang from Salzburg than St. Gilgen (use Google maps to see why). I am also sure that there are taxis (I doubt Uber) in both of these villages, but it is wholly unnecessary given the sizes.

You take the bus to St Gilgen and then walk to the ferry. If you have a car, apparently you can drive in from the "back side" down at Strobl.

Arriving in St. Gilgen from Salzburg is easier. Bus # 150 goes direct, with no changes. Using the SBG Verkehr app (for Salzburg public transit), there are multiple stops in St. Gilgen.

If you go to Google maps, find St Gilgen busbahn, then click on the bus figure, click on 150, you can see then entire route.

Can any of you share if the walk from st. Gilgen bus stop (taking bus 150) to the boat dock (going on boat )to Wolfgang) has signs directing you?
Also after taking a cable car up the mountain, is it better to take bus from Wolfgang back to Salzburg )where do u change buses?) or better to take boat back to st. Gilgen for the bus 150 with no change? Is one option shorter than the other?

If you also did Salzburg to Konigssee bus, were there signs from bus stop to the boat dock?

Thank you!

No, there are no signs from the bus station to the boat dock but all you need to do is walk downhill. The village is the size of a postage stamp.

Do you mean the cable car in St. Gilgen? The Schafbergbahn in St. Wolfgang is a train, not a cable car. To get from St. Wolfgang back to Salzburg, it is probably fastest to take the bus rather than the ferry back to St. Gilgen as it is significantly cheaper and faster. It sounds like you are struggling on how to use maps and directions. I suggest using this website of the Salzburg public transportation authority for directions - https://fahrplan.salzburg-verkehr.at/webapp/?language=en_GB#!P|TP!H|104702. It will show you that to get from St. Wolfgang back to Salzburg you change buses in Strobl.

For getting to Konigsee, use the same link I shared above for bus directions.

Use google maps if you're unsure, otherwise just head toward that big lake-shaped body of water. you'll see the dock and the ticket office.
