Linz or Melk

As we make our way from Salzburg to Vienna, we would like to stop for a night or two in another charming city to soak up as much Austrian beauty as we can. Trying to decide between Linz or Melk? Also open to other options.

Thanks in advance.

This is no contest. Austria’s second largest and most industrial city or a quant village with an iconic abbey? Of course the answer is Melk.

iconic abbey

I agree with Emily that Melk Abbey is kind of a must see.
Just in case you don’t want to see any more baroque …

most industrial city

It’s the industrial heritage of Linz that provides some special sights.

Ars Electronica Center – exhibitions and interactive stations to learn about newest trends of artificial intelligence, neuroscience, robotics, autonomous mobility and biotechnology.

voestalpine Stahlwelt – learn about the use-cases and production of steel.
Saturdays only, needs to be pre-booked.

Mural Harbor Gallery - About 300 Graffiti on old industrial constructions at the harbor of Linz. It’s one of the biggest coherent Graffiti-Galleries in Europe.
Can be visited with a guided tour only. To get an impression what you can expect search for “mural_harbor” on Instagram.

I suggest Melk - It has that old world charm. You can go cyling/hiking beside Danube and vineyards. It is that small town where I felt homely.
