Ligist-Graz area

Ligist is somewhat off the beaten track, i.e. public transport even to Graz, which is not far away, could be a bit difficult. For day trips you will have to go to Graz first anyway, so I would concentrate on the city and the surrounding area. Going to Salzburg from Graz is not reasonable, as the train ride is 4 hours one-way.

How about Maribor, Slovenia? Easy to reach by car -- more complicated by public transportation.

We have a car so can do day trips from Ligist. Thanks for any ideas

I honestly had to look up this village as it is quite remote and small. Your best day trips will be Graz and the south Styrian wine route - https://www.steiermark.com/en/Styria/Experience-Styrias-cuisine/Styrian-cuisine/Wine/Styrian-Wine-Roads. Notable that Styria (or Steiermark in German) is the name of the state in Austria where you will be.

Salzburg is not a rational day trip from this village as it is on the other side of Austria.

Thanks Emily. You provided me with great tips for Vienna. We are in Ligist for a family reunion in the town where my Dad grew up. Do you have recommendations for the wine route. I like wine as opposed to beer.

That is so amazing about the family reunion. My grandfather was from a village not too far from Ligist. He went to the US as a child and I never dreamed I'd be living in Austria.

Anywho...the link I sent you has some good info on the wine route. That area is really well known for wine (it is called the Tuscany of Austria, as it has a special microclimate). I'm sure with a car you will find beautiful areas nearby to explore.

Thanks Emily. I looked up the wine route and the types of wine. We leave Canada on Thursday, fly into Vienna, arrive Ligist on Friday. getting very excited. We end the trip in Vienna and you provided me with great neighbourhood info for exploring and our hotel is Beethoven Wein. I have been to the major attractions in Vienna so want to walk around the centre.
