Kids in Salzburg

Hello Other Families that traveled to Salzburg! I wanted to ask what activities you did with your children that they liked? Any good playgrounds to check out? Did you do the Mozart dinner concert and how did the children do? We have two girls ages 11 and 10. They are good travelers, but we have learned the very very hard way that we can't do activities that last really late into the night. Just takes too long for the kids to "recover" from the lost sleep!

Thanks! We fly out tomorrow!

Do either of them like chess? There are huge chess sets near the church. They might even get a (supervised) game against a local...

If they have seen The Sound of Music, there’s several SoM spots around Salzburg to see. Also, taking the funicular up to the fortress and going to the Hellbrunn Palace to see the trick fountains is a good option. There’s a nice park next to Hellbrunn with swings, etc. and nice flowers.

Depending on how long you’re there, you could take a day trip- bus to St. Gilgen and boat to St. Wolfgang. There’s small boat rental, swimming, and the cogwheel train on the edge of town that goes up to the Schafberg.

It’s a beautiful area. Enjoy your trip!

2 yrs ago we went on the bicycle SOM tour with FRÄULEIN MARIA´S BICYCLE TOUR. This was a highlight of my two girls trip to Austria/Germany. They were 11 & 14 yrs old at the time.

We went last summer, our daughter was 10. In Salzburg, she enjoyed the trick fountain in Hellbrun palace. Her favorite were salt mine in Berchtesgaden, boat ride and hikes around Berchtesgaden.

There is a zoo. It’s near Hellbrunn.

The salt mine at Hallein is great but always busy. Get there as early as you can in the morning. I also enjoyed the Castle at that age.

Mirabell Gardens include a "Dwarf Garden", collection of statues and good photo ops for kids (also a SOM stop, I believe).

We regret missing Hellbrunn "trick fountains"; sounds like a hoot on a warm day.
