Just a Few Hours in Vienna (River Cruise in April)

We will have just a few hours in Vienna after a City Tour in the morning. Looking for a good lunch location and any other must sees. We love the local scene.

We were on an Avalon "Danube Discovery" tour in spring of 2017. Delightful.
Our itinerary included a day in Vienna with afternoon optional tours. We elected to explore Vienna on our own after the walking tour ended. Vienna's relationship with The Danube is unlike Budapest's, where the river is central to the city.
In Vienna, the river is on the eastern edge of town. You will probably be bused to the center of Vienna and your tour will begin, there after a ride around the ring road.
I'd suggest Kunsthistorischs - the Museum of Fine Art. You won't be disappointed. The Habsburgs' collection is staggering. If you have taken an art appreciation class - many of your " friends" are there.
A nice cafe is on the second floor - don't skip dessert.

For famous and delicious weiner schnitzel, we liked Figlmuller.

I would have lunch at the Palmenhaus if the weather was nice. If you’re already visiting the center, I would go to Schonbrunn Palace. Take the U4 subway line to the Schonbrunn stop. It only takes 10-15 minutes.

After our Viking river cruise tour of Vienna we did the city on our own. We walked to the subway and took it to a station near the naschmarkt. From there we walked up to the parliament and town hall then wandered our way back to the boat, kind of retracing the earlier tour. It was much better without all the tour groups around. We stopped at Cafe Demel for coffee and a pastry. We also stopped in at St. Stephens church. We arrived back at the boat for dinner.
