Itinerary/logistics question for 6 night's between Vienna - Saltzburg - Prague.

My Husband and I will do part of our honeymoon in Europe where we land in Vienna on December 15 in the late afternoon and depart from Prague on December 21 in the early evening. Would it be too much to do Vienna - Saltzburg (1 night) - then to Prague? We haven't been to either of these countries before. We're definitely into visiting the Christmas markets, the main castle/palace sites, an opera in Vienna, and maybe a city walking tour in each location. We don't want to do a bunch of museums on this trip, or feel the need to see every neighborhood. I do feel like we'll be a bit constrained with the limited hours of daylight for certain activities.

I've heard good things about visiting Saltzburg, and wonder if it might be worth it to fit in with this timeline if we're sticking to the main highlights in Vienna and Prague? We could take the trains, but I've also seen all day private guided trips from Vienna to Saltzburg (and maybe Hallstatt). Then we could take a train the next day directly from Vienna to Prague rather than Saltzburg to Prague.

Appreciate any feedback or personal experiences!

I loved Salzburg (and Vienna and Prague) but unfortunately, I feel you are short on time. Salzburg is 4 hours by train from Vienna, if I'm remembering correctly.

I think it would be too much because you really only have 5 days for both Vienna and Prague once you factor in the 4-hour train ride from Vienna to Prague.

Have fun in Vienna & Prague!

How much time you spend in any place is a personal choice. But maybe it’s easier to decide if you see it on paper. I assume you have your tickets, so I won’t try and argue anything about the timing LOL. I would skip Salzburg, but you don’t have to. Just my ideas based on what I like to do.

15 December: Arrive Vienna. Let’s say 2pm. Pooped out with jet lag. Pretty easy afternoon close to the hotel.
16 December Vienna
17 December Vienna (wish I had one more day in Vienna, but it’s an okay sampler stay)
18 December Leave Vienna bt train about 9am arrive Salzburg about noon. Lunch and a tour maybe. Nice dinner and wander a bit.
19 December leave Salzburg by train about 10am, arrive Prague about 3:30pm (yes it will take over 5.5 hours and there is no direct train). Wander about the old town a bit. (Truth: I am not a huge Salzburg fan, okay as a stop along the way, but for me, not a destination city)
20 December in Prague
21 December, maybe do a tour with the airport being the end stop for your evening departure. That way you don’t stress about getting to the airport.

18 December Vienna. Do something organized in the morning then take a train after lunch to get to Prague about 7pm. Dinner in Prague (8pm is normal).
19 December in Prague (you could take a morning train, but early morning)
20 December in Prague (two full days in Prague works for me)

Private guided trips are rather expensive. They do not offer a real advantage regarding traveling times in comparison with express trains.

Add up how much time you will spend traveling (from/to airport, transfer between cities, day tours), and calculate which proportion of your total trip it will consume.
