Itinerary Help for Day in Melk

We'll be coming from St. Wolfgang Tuesday morning, which will be 4 hours by bus/train to reach Melk. For ease, we're just staying overnight in Melk at Hotel Restaurant zur Post. Then we'll be off to Vienna for 5 days.

Questions:
I'm seeing that the Abbey is a place that's popular with tour companies. Is there any advantage going through it Tuesday late afternoon vs. Wednesday morning?

Transportation - train/boat combo to Vienna. Do you recommend this (we'll have a carry-on suitcase), and if so, which one do you recommend?
Usually I purchase our train tickets on-line ahead of time if there's discounts available. How much ahead of time should I purchase for Austria train travel?

We went to Melk Abbey yesterday from Vienna so I can give my impressions. We arrived at 10:30 AM on a Sunday and had no problem touring after taking the 9 AM train from Vienna (1 hour 15 min).

We then caught the 1:45 PM boat to Krems and the 16:01 PM train back to Vienna. We are staying at Pension Suzanne so we got off the last stop, Franz-Joseph Plaza, bought 48 hour pass at the OBB ticket window in Franz- Joseph for Vienna and took the Tram D to the Opera house (different for what RS recommends as the stop was closer)

We buy as we go because we want to flexibility in time etc

We toured the abbey last week, as a day trip from Vienna. There was no big tour company there, at the time. We took the 11 A.M. English guided tour. In your place, I would ask to leave the luggage at the hotel, while visiting the abbey. You can then take the boat to Vienna - - relaxing and scenic. We stopped at Krems for a short visit, and took the train the rest of the way back. I'm not sure that train station has baggage storage, however, which would complicate matters for you. It's a stop on a very local line. If you go to the OBB site, you can see the options for combining boat and train. I would think, also, that your hotel can help with advice on transportation.
