My family of four are going to be in switzerland and austria for 12 days in may 2020.
We will be spending 6 days in switzerland( 3 in wengen/ lauterbrunnen and 3 in lucerne), followed by 3 days in salzburg, 3 in vienna and flying home on the 13 th day.
On our 3 rd day in salzburg we want tonplan a day trip.
Should we visit hallstat lake or innsbruck?

Well, you pass through Innsbruck on the way from Luzern to Salzburg, so if you want to see it, why not just stop there on the way.

Thats one option , but we will have 4 big bags with us, and we plan to take a direct train to salzburg from zurich.

The direct trains (Railjets) are not non-stops, they just don't require a transfer. They go through and stop in Innsbruck.

There is usually good baggage storage at the major cities, so it should be easy to store your bags in Innsbruck if you want to make the stop along the way.
We really enjoyed our trip to Berchtesgaden and boat trip and hike on Konigssee as day trips from Salzburg.

Non-stop trains are a rarity. Trains always stop every few minutes. The trains from Zürich to Innsbruck are actually continuing to Salzburg and Vienna. Same train for all 3 legs of your trip!
