Is visiting Berchtesgaden even an option from Salzburg currently?

All,

Will be staying 2 nights in Salzburg; a main factor for staying there was to be able to day-trip to Berchtesgaden. I am well aware of the issues (and options) for getting to Munich from Salzburg, however I have a different question: Since Berchtesgaden is in Germany, is that also blocked off, preventing us from visiting, or making it inconvenient to the point where we should spend our time on other sightseeing activities?

Many thanks in advance!

We visited Berchtesgaden on our way from Munich to Salzburg. I guess Im not sure what you mean about it being "blocked off"? It was very easy and convenient getting to and from there. I wanna say it was only about a 2-3 hour drive between the 2 places leaving plenty of time to spend the day at Berchtesgaden. Hope this helps.

Hi Aly,

Going from Germany (Munich) to Berchtesgaden is not an issue, since that is the reverse direction of all the refugee immigration traffic. It is going from Salzburg (Austria) into Berchtesgaden (Germany) that I fear will be an issue, since Germany instituted border controls at the Austria border and stopped train traffic from Salzburg to Munich. We will already be in Salzburg, so I want to know if that is feasible or not currently.

Thanks,
Wade

My wife and I are in the same boat. We have an Eagle's Nest tour booked from Salzburg in a couple of weeks and I'm curious whether those are still running due to border controls. My wife emailed the tour operator to see what the current status is and I'll report back here with their response.

Going from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden and then to Freilassing would be a convenient way to get around the blockage from Salzburg directly across the border to Freilassing - too convenient, I'm afraid. I suspect they are checking the border from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden just as closely. Of course, with an American passport, you should be able to get across, but there might be delays.

My son just drove from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden today, and no problems at all. Just drove right across the border. He was wanting to get back to Munich airport, and he had noticed a long, long, line of cars waiting to enter Germany when he drove to Salzburg on the autostrada a few days ago and wanted to avoid that. So he stopped to tour Berchtesgaden and Eagle's Nest and made his way back to airport on smaller roads as he did notice the autostrada was still backed up in areas that were not even near the border.

When you say the Autostrada, do you mean the expressways in Austria (?). Or in Germany (Autobahn, actually).

I meant the autobahn in Germany. And also, of course, avoiding the main highway in Austria from Salzburg to Munich ( not sure of the name ).

"avoiding the main highway in Austria from Salzburg to Munich"

Salzburg is on the border with Germany. Virtually all of the highway from Salzburg to Munich is in Germany.

Wade,

I posed your question this morning to the owner of the hotel I was staying at in Salzburg. He laughed and said "tell him we're going to lock him up in a salt mine for two weeks".

My observations in Salzburg over the last few days are that you won't have any trouble at all making a day trip to Berghtesgaden. I saw a red DB Bus heading from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden yesterday afternoon and it was just about empty (that seems to be a regularly scheduled run). You could also travel by Van with one of the tour companies (Panorama or Bob's), and shouldn't have any issues.

No guarantees of course, but I doubt that you'll have any trouble getting to Berchtesgaden.

Ken,

I really appreciate your input on this, my deepest thanks...and just another reason this is by far best travel forum on the internet!

By the way, which hotel were you staying at? I want to avoid the owner so I don't get locked up in the salt mines for a couple of weeks. :) :)

Many, many thanks!

Wade,

You're very welcome!

Getting between Munich and Salzburg seems to be a bit "problematic" at the moment, so some alternate methods may have to be used. Other than that things seem to be much better.

Not sure if this applies to your situation, but the hotel owner also said that there's a Shuttle running from Salzburg to Munich airport, so that could be an option for some as well. However, I haven't checked on the details of the Shuttle.

Hope you have a great time on your trip!

Some people have reported that the Salzburg bus #24 is running from F. Hanusch Platz to Freilassing. If so, get off at Lindenstr. on Münchnerstr. (near Rupertskirche) and walk about ½ km to the Freilassing Bahnhof, from which there are hourly trains to Berchtesgaden Hbf.

We went to berschgarden on Sunday 27th from Salzburg. Took the 840 bus both ways. There were no problems or delays of any kind. Today, Monday the 28th, we left Salzburg for Munich. The trains are still not leaving from Salzburg into Germany but we took at short 25 minute cab ride into Freilassing. The trains then go on to Munich. Only a short line at the border, where police were checking cars and trucks.

For what it's worth, here is the response we received from the tour company regarding the Eagle's Nest tour:

"So far we did not have any interruptions of our tour, but please bring your passports with you in case there are border controls."

I just returned yesterday from a trip to Salzburg and München. The 840 bus still runs uninterrupted from Salzburg Hbf to Berchtesgaden. The bus stop in Salzburg is a little hard to find though. Trains are not running from Salzburg to München. We left the Salzburg on Monday and spent the day in Berchtesgaden then took the train to München via a connection in Freilassing. We returned to Salzburg on Wednesday. The train ran to Freilassing and then a shuttle bus was waiting to take us the rest of the way back to Salzburg.
