I have IHG points I would like to use. I am undecided between the InterContinental and Hotel Indigo. The InterContinental has a better location it seems but is an older hotel. Hotel Indigo is newer. It will be my first time in Vienna so will be doing all the touristy things. I like the convenience of having groceries, cafe, and restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. It seems I have to take the metro for everything with Hotel Indigo.
You figured it out. The location of the Hotel Intercontinental near the Ringstrasse and next to Vienna’s Stadtpark is superior to the Hotel Indigo’s location. With most of Vienna’s attractions located inside the Ringstrasse, you’ll find the Intercontinental’s location far more convenient. The Intercontinental Hotel is older, but in Vienna, that is a plus. Many of Vienna’s most luxurious hotels like the Hotel Imperial, the Hotel Bristol and the Hotel Sacher are located on or near the Ringstrasse.
Ok, just to add some balance. I love where the Indigo is located. I've had many office colleagues stay there. I am also very familiar with the InterCon.
Hotel Indigo is about a 5 minute Ubahn ride to the Ring. You can also walk to the Ring quickly, passing through some cool areas, particularly if you walk down Margaretenstrasse. Hotel Indigo is actually much better located for good restaurants, cafes and grocery stores than the InterCon. Yes, the InterCon is on the Ring, but it is in a dead zone - not much happening foodwise in the immediate area. The InterCon is sandwiched between the Stadtpark and the ice rink.
Around Hotel Indigo:
- Café Rüdigerhof - classic Jugendsil cafe
- Gregors Bakery - many say this is the best Sachertorte
- KARL. - Really good stuff here
- Zum Alten Fassl - probably my favorite restaurant in Vienna
- Café Jelinek - the favorite of many
- Bäckerei Café Felzl - Kinda my favorite bakery
You also have the Schloss Quadrat, which has several restaurants.
I see you are from NYC, so this is like comparing 5th Avenue with the East Village. What do you prefer?
Thank you so much both for your replies.
Thank you Emily for your detailed mentions of the various places around the hotel. That's exactly what I am looking for. Easy access for breakfast in the morning or snack in the evening. Also feels like Hotel Indigo area would be more of a local vibe which would be great.
Easy access for breakfast in the morning ...
In Austria this is not an issue as every hotel usually has a breakfast buffet.
