Hi,
We are travelling in May 2025 between Innsbruck and Vienna by train. We have a week between the two. We like small towns and walking downhill or around hills. Where should we stop?
If you take your time you may not travel on the shortest route between Innsbruck and Vienna. Here you can find the train routes available in Austria: https://www.oebb.at/en/dam/jcr:7fc18e86-1c23-4cf0-b9e0-94eb05d32c3e/Bahnnetz_24.pdf
You have a lot of choices for a detour. (Note that route 220 will be closed between Böckstein and Mallnitz due to repair works in a more than 100 years old tunnel.)
My vote would be Salzburg. The city itself is pretty nifty, and it serves as a good base for day trips to places like Berchtesgaden, Königssee, Eisreisenwelt (ice cave) and the Salzkammergut.
I suggest the Wolfgangsee. Stay in Sankt Gilgen.
Sangt Gilgen looks lovely with lots of walks
