We're travelling Munich-Salzburg-Innsbruck and had planned to go from Innsbruck to Fussen for a few days and see the castles. After reading some posts, I'm thinking it may not be worth the hassle of the train/bus to get there. (We toured the castle around 30 years ago thought it'd be fun to go back). Any other suggestions in lieu of Fussen? (Perhaps rethink Vienna which we had crossed off the list as a big city?)

I am going to agree that an alternative might be a better plan. I would go on to Vienna.

Perhaps stay a few nights in the Garmisch area? Visit Linderhof if you haven’t been yet. Nearby Mittenwald is very charming.
For something different… go into Italy and visit the Dolomites and Bolzano?
