Innsbruck sightseeing

I will be visiting Innsbruck in December for the first time in over 20 years. I am considering the 48 Hour Innsbruck Card at https://www.innsbruck.info/en/sightseeing/innsbruck-card.html. This includes a ticket to the Nordkette (your link) as well as entrance to many of the museums and attractions in Innsbruck itself. Basically, Euro 71 for two days and Nordkette or Euro 56 (senior) for just Nordkette. Our trip is focused on the Christmas Markets so I need to do some research on what museums and sights I will want to see and if I will have time for them on this trip.

My plan is to take the cable car all the way to the top. As I understand, it is only one ride with 3 stops. You pay to go all the way up or to just one of the two intermediate stops. Locals please correct me if I misunderstand.

I imagine that it will be incredibly beautiful in October.

The folk culture museum is excellent. Also try to see the Hofkirche with Maximilian's tomb (it was intended for Vienna, but the foundations of the building there couldn't support it), and Schloss Ambras is definitely worth visiting.

Everybody seems to forget Innsbruck's Hofburg (court palace), that is a sort of small version of the Vienna Habsburg court palace.

We were in Innsbruck for four nights in June 2026. We loved it so much we are returning in June 2027.
We bought the 3-day Innsbruck Card which allowed us to do so many things.

Nordkette (and Alpenzoo): Plan for a half-day to visit Nordkette and you want good weather. We finally had good weather on our second full day so we headed up. We rode all three lifts (funicular, cable car 1, cable car 2) to Hafelekar where we hiked to the Top of Innsbruck. On the way down, we stopped at Seegrube for a short hike and then again at Alpenzoo. If you are going to do the zoo, this is time to do so.

Patscherkofel: On our third day, we rode the Patscherkofelbahn (gondola). There was not enough time to climb to the mountain top so we hiked sideways around the mountain and had a direct view of the famous Brenner Pass ... I think this may have been a better hike than climbing to the top.

Experience Tirol: Be sure to do the Experience Tirol which is an hour activity. It is located in a mall-like building on the second floor or so. It was so much fun. My wife and I wear glasses and had no issues with the VR googles.

The card gives you nice outdoor and indoor activities so you have things to do regardless of the weather.

We were in Salzburg for three nights in May 2026. We loved it so much we are returning in May 2027.
We bought the 72-hour Salzburg card at our hotel (not tourist center) ... we had to pay in cash so we went to a nearby ATM.
We used the 72-hour card over four days as you get 72 hours (not limited to 3 calendar days like the Vienna Pass) from when you activate it (not from when you purchase it).

Day 1 afternoon - Funicular, Hohensalzburg Fortress, Fortress Museum: The fortress is the number one reason many of us go to Salzburg. If you have time afterwards, tour the DomQuartier and/or then take the Monchsberg Lift for some nice views.

Day 2 - Untersberg cable car, Salzburg Zoo, Hellbrunn Palace & Trick Fountains: This was a full-day of activities with no backtracking ... these activities line up nicely. We took a bus to Unterberg. I took the hike to the Salzburger Hochthron, highest point on the mountain with my two adult sons, while my wife found a bench to enjoy views over the Salzburg plateau. The hike takes around an hour and is medium somewhat steep hike. You can see the route and decide if it is too much or not. After Untersberg, we took bus to zoo to see the red pandas and the Artic wolves. From the zoo, we walked to Hellbrunn (you can take the bus) and really enjoyed the trick fountains. This was a fun day and logistics were very doable.

Day 3 - Werfen Day Trip: We took a day trip to Werfen to see the castle, birds-of-prey show, and walk the Sound of Music trail ... where Sister Maria frolics with the children in a meadow with the Werfen castle in the background. Our hotel guest card allowed us to ride the train at no cost and Salzburg Card gave a discount. We have been to many castles and my adult son said this was his favorite to date. The movie, "Where Eagles Dare ' with Clint Eastwood, was filmed at Werfen Castle.

Day 4 morning - Salzburg stuff before we departed Salzburg.

Salzburg City Card activities we completed (*** Excellent, ** Good, * Okay):
*** Fortress, Untersberg/Zoo/Trick Fountains, Werfen day trip, Mirabell Palace Concert, Mirabell gardens
** DomQuartier, Monchsberg Lift, St. Peter's Abbey
* Mozart Residence and Mozart's Birthplace (if time permits, are included)

In Vienna you need to distinguish between public transport passes (24 hours Vienna, 7 days Vienna) and the Vienna City Card which adds some discounts for sights to the aforementioned public transport passes.

The 3-days public transport pass does not exist anymore. If you buy a 72-hours Vienna City Card it will include a 7 days Vienna public transport pass.

Best is to buy a Vienna City Card "discounts only" if ever.

Staying at a recognised accommodation in Salzburg you will receive the Salzburg mobility card which gives you free public transport in Salzburg region.
