Innsbruck

I’m planning to stop in Innsbruck on my way from Oberammergau to Salzburg. I’m not staying overnight. My plan is to just take the Nordkettenbahn up to Hafelekar and visit the Alpenzoo. Maybe look around town a bit. How much time should I allow. I’m thinking 6 hours or so. The 2.5 Rick says you need for Hafelekar plus another couple of hours for the zoo.

Note: I’m very passionate about zoos and very much looking forward to this one. Please don’t tell me we have zoos in the US.

This might depend on the time of year. Traffic is variable by season in and around Innsbruck, as is parking availability. Winter/ski season is crazy busy, from what I've been told. I've visited in summer and had no trouble getting around. The town itself is walkable, if all you want is a taste of the historic area. Plenty of places to eat there, and there are many museums if you have time. (Anyone into Hapsburg history and who likes museums can spend many happy days there.)

We will be there in mid-Sept for an overnight. I'll bookmark this post and if you don't get many answers, I'll let you know how it goes for us.

I like Innsbruck. We did Alpenzoo many years ago and I'm sure it's an even better place to visit nowadays. Not that particular mountain top, and I can't speak to your speed of travel, but Innsbruck with its zoo, old town/sights and Schloss Ambras is good couple of days for us.
