Impact of border checks on Salzburg and drive to Munich.

I will be in Salzburg for two days on 9/18 and 9/19. Have border checks impacted travel within Salzburg? I am to drive to the Munich airport from Salzburg on 9/19. Can anyone tell me what to expect and how long it might take?

This is a very fluid changing situation and any advice now is premature. You need to find reliable sources of current info on the ground when in Salzburg (local version of AAA perhaps?) and also use resources like CNN International, the BBC and local variants of same.

Difficult to tell as the situation changes daily. Keep in mind that the motorway between Salzburg and Munich is always very trafficked and you can easily find yourself in long queues even without an international crisis. Always leave plenty of time for this route (2,5 hours only under the best possible circumstances).

It there is a queue at the Walserfeld motorway crossing, you could try to exit Salzburg from Innsbruckerstrasse, drive past the airport and Wals and enter Germany (there was once a small custom house that was destroyed, but maybe they have reinstated controls). Just past the borderline (marked by an Austrian petrol station) there is a well marked shortcut in a wood making possible to enter motorway to Munich (but no shortcut on the opposite direction). This itinerary has only local traffic and maybe could be easier to cross.

There wasn't a long line today. We went by bus and were pulled off bus for passport checks. We made it to Munich no thanks to Austria. Very little help and not very good information. Some of the Austrian citizens came up to us and told us that we should complain to the police as they aren't taking care of the holiday travelers. It was very confusing. We were told that a bus would take us to the border town of frassinglein but that did not happen. We ended up following other lost people and finally took bus 2 and then bus 24(which wasn't running regularly) and then walked to train station. We were also pulled off bus by police and had to show passport. All in all not a very good border crossing. A taxi would have helped some but we were told long border lines which was not the case.

Since we were in a car, we decided to take the scenic route. We drove to Berchtesgaden and there was no border check happening on that route. We took small roads to Siegsdorf and then the autobahn to Munich. It was a beautiful drive. We met other travelers trying to get to Munich by train and their game plan was to take a taxi across the border to a small train station and then try to get to Munich from there.

I would not leave Germany to go to Salzburg . Especially for just a quick visit because you cannot get back into Germany easily. The busses are packed and it didn't seem as if they had enough busses going . Some fellow travelers had made the mistake to leave Germany just to see Salzburg and then go back to Germany . They told me that was a very bad plan and that they were misinformed how to get back to Germany . The trains are not going across the border and that doesn't seem like it's going to change very quickly.
