How to Get to the Ehrenburg Castles in Reutte Austria

My wife and I are travelling to Germany/Austria next month and looking for some advice on how to best visit Neuschwanstein Castle and the Ehrenburg Castle Ensemble in the same day.

Our trip starts on August 19 in Munich, and we need to be in Salzburg by the following evening, so there's a fairly short window to do all of this. Ideally, we'd like to get the 9:00 AM tour of Neuschwanstein and head to Reutte in the afternoon; our hotel is in Fussen.

I know we can do it by picking up a rental car in Munich at 7:00 AM, but this will also cost about $250. Public transport should be much cheaper if logistically possible. Here are my concerns:

  • In order to get to Fussen by a decent hour via train, we'll have to leave before 9:00 AM and therefore can't use the Bavaria pass.
  • There is very limited info online regarding bus/train schedules from Fussen to Reutte.
  • Lastly, it appears the Ehrenburg castles are a few miles from the bus/train station, and may require a taxi or long hike.

That said, does any have any experience with this and know if we're better-off just renting a car in Munich and driving, or using trains/buses? Might be a dumb questions, but is Uber available in the part of the world?

There is a direct bus (Austrian Regional Bus 4250) from Reutte Bahnhof to the Ehrenberger Klause bus stop. It takes only about 5 minutes. It's a 3 min (?) walk uphill from there from there. However, buses leave Reutte at only 10:07. 12:07, 13:57 and 16:02 daily. Otherwise, it's a 4 mile walk from Reutte Bahnhof.

Here is the website to find the schedule. The bus goes From: Reutte Bahnhof To: Naserreith Postplatz.

Unfortunately, that is a one-way route. To get back to Reutte Bahnhof, you have to take the bus on to the next train station and take the train back to Reutte. It takes 25 to 45 minutes depending on how long you wait for the train at Heiterwang Dorf station. I think you would be better off taking the bus on to Ehrwald and taking the train from there to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

BTW, there is a lot of information online about buses from Füssen to Reutte. Look at the Bahn website or the bus schedules at www.rvo-bus.de.

The evening following August 19 is the evening of August 20. Don't you mean "by that evening"?
