Need help with Salzburg itinerary

My husband and I will be in Salzburg in beginning of September for possibly 4 nights. We wanted to keep a home base in Salzburg and do day trips from Salzburg . Some questions I have in mind
1.. Would a trip to Halstatt and St Wolfgang require a full day trip using public transport?
2. Are there any other places we should do day trips while staying in Salzburg ?
I have been reading too many posts about places that we can travel to while staying in Salzburg that now it all looks very confusing.
3. Are there any musicals or shows we can attend while in Salzburg ?
We dont get to do a lot of that back home. So just seeing if we can do something different while in Salzburg.

Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The things we saw from Salzburg outside Salzburg was some beautiful scenery on the way to the town where they flimed the wedding in the Sound of Music (part of a tour) and a half day trip to the Eagles Nest, both pretty popular places.

We just got back...
-recommend Crowne Plaza Hotel Pitter 10 min walk from train station and
10 min walk to Old Town...very reasonable, rooms clean and large, ice machine
on floor, great outdoor deck & restaurant on top floor with great view of castle
-full day trip to Halstatt with public transport but worth it
-yes on musicals and with a dinner
-going to Cathedral for Sunday morning mass has great organ music
-Salzburg Card gets you into all the sights, castles, cable car and bus transport/
its a great value
