Hotel suggestions in Salzburg and Hallstatt

I am trying to nail down our hotel reservations for a trip in late August. My husband and I prefer small hotels, pensions or B&Bs. We are staying in Europe five weeks so price is a consideration...trying to keep costs at around 90-100 euros. We also like to be close to the center of town.
Any suggestions?

For Salzburg, I have enjoyed staying on the outskirts at Haus Ballwein. On her street in front of her property, the bus takes you into downtown within 15 minutes. The rooms are large and the buffet breakfast is wonderful. You could also check out Moosestrasse (where Haus Ballwein is located) to see other listings for pensions. Have a lovely trip.

We also stayed at Haus Ballwein. Great location, room large and spotless and the breakfast was wonderful. Very easy to get around from there as the buses stop right by the B&B. We bought bus passes for the time we were in Salzburg...very convenient.

It looks wonderful! Do you remember how much the bus passes were and how often the buses ran?

We spent three nights at the Salzbug Hotel Mozart on Franz-Josef-Straße, about three blocks from the pedestrian only Linzer Gasse and an enjoyable walk to old town, short walk to Mirabrll Garden. About a 1 km walk to the train station and on an auto permitted road if you want a taxi drop/pick up. Prices (during the winter) were very reasonable to the point of not being memorable high. Helpful staff.

Austrian 4 star rated, in room WiFi, and a nice breakfast.

PS. If you are a meat eater and are interested in a traditional Austrian, try the Gasthaus Alter Fuchs (Old Fox) on Linzer Gasse:

We have stayed at Hotel Drei Kreuz snd Goldenes Theatre Hotel, both within walking distance of the old town. Reasonable price, good breakfast. And also enjoyed dinner at Alte Fuchs, a few blocks away.

Rick's guidebook (p. 269) mentions a 24-hour Salzburg bus pass for about €3.40 and a 7-day version for 14.60. Try to buy from a Tabal/TraficK shop or a ticket machine; single tickets and daily passes both cost more if purchased onboard the bus. See also www.svv-info.at.

This May my family and I will be staying at the Gruener Baum hotel in Hallstatt, http://www.gruenerbaum.cc/nc/en/home.html, it is one of RS recommended hotels. I purposely chose a rooms on the lake side for the view. We will also be in Salzburg that time and will be staying at Altstadthotel Kasererbraeu, http://www.kasererbraeu.at/en, I chose this hotel for its location in the old part of Salzburg. Walking distance to most of the historical sites.
Enjoy your trip.

Barbara,

In Salzburg you could have a look at Hotel Krone 1512. It's in a nice part of town, easy walking distance to the sights and I've found the rooms to be very comfortable and the staff are great.

In Hallstatt, the previously mentioned Seehotel Grüner Baum would be an excellent choice but it will probably be above your budget level, especially if you get a lake view room. Another choice is Gasthof Simony, which is right next door to Grüner Baum. It's an older property (but nicely maintained) with creaky floors and some "character", they also offer lake view rooms and it would likely be at your budget level.

I too stayed at the Hotel Krone 1512. I agree with Ken's assessment completely. I loved the location. There are restaurants very near by and the staff was very nice. There was a good breakfast too when I stayed there.
