We're planning four nights in Vienna at the end of August 2027, the 25th to the 29th, and I'd love your take on where to stay. We're in our seventies, we walk and bike most days, but we're not looking to march through museums. We want to hang about: coffee houses, the markets, wandering neighbourhoods, parks, and finding good places to eat. Silvy is a painter and likes somewhere with character and some art about the place; neither of us wants anything corporate or slickly designed.
We've been looking at the 7th around Spittelberg and Neubaugasse, and at the 6th near the Naschmarkt, though we're open to the 8th. What we're after is quiet at night, small or family-run rather than a chain, with a lift, air conditioning, and ideally a proper breakfast, somewhere around 150 to 250 Euros a night.
What we've already considered, so you don't have to repeat it back to me: the Altstadt on Kirchengasse, which we loved the sound of but which is quoting over 300 Euros for our dates, and Hotel Beethoven Wien near the Naschmarkt, which looks promising and which I haven't priced yet.
Two things I genuinely can't work out from a website, and which you'd know: which of those streets are actually quiet at night, and which of the small places have a real lift rather than a half-flight up from the entrance. Any places you'd send friends to or anywhere you'd steer us away from?
I have a good one for you that ticks all the boxes - Boutique Hotel Spiess & Spiess, which is on a lovely quiet street in the 3rd District (where I live). The area is well known for its breakfast places - too many to name - and the fabulous Rochusmarkt (my local market). This is a safe, well connected area with a U3 (subway) stop in the same block. Stephansplatz is less than 10 minutes away.
My parents visit me often and stay in exactly this area - they love it.
I checked booking.com and the Boutique Hotel Spiess & Spiess is available during your dates within your stated budget.
