Hotel Beds situation...personal space, much?

LOL, ok so I'm an American, and unless im travelling with my husband or kids, I am accustomed to having two beds in a room, and this does not seem in any way standard in Austria. I'm having some issues finding hotel rooms that have two separate beds in them. Most are the two twins together to make a king, so yes, technically they are separate, but not like I'm accustomed to in America. My travel companion and I do not want to sleep in such close proximity to one another, but also do not want to spend mega bucks getting two rooms. i have found a few places that offer a twin room with "splitted" beds, and came across one that called that sort of set up a triple room... Can/will most hotels split the beds into two and what is the proper terminology to use when inquiring about such a set up with hotels. One representative said they do offer separate beds but then i started thinking that maybe he considers the two twins together as separate... LOL, i'm probably splitting hairs here, but I have sleep issues, so this is a critical thing for me to get right so we both get rest while there...
Thanks,
Denise

Just tell them you would like two beds.

You can just push them further apart if they are too close for your liking. That is what I typically do when traveling with a friend.

Yes, I think asking for a "Double room with two beds" would be most clear, sometimes it would be called a "twin room", but noting two beds would be best.

The beds likely will be what you consider to be a single bed or smaller, if you are specific the room should be set up the way you want, otherwise, as the previous poster mentioned, just pull them apart.

Ran into that a lot both in Austria and Germany. It was very simple to just move the beds apart. The covers are all separate anyway even when the 2 twins are pushed together. But don't hope for larger beds like you get in the US (2 queen in the room). I never found them.

Maybe worth adding, all of us are assuming you are staying in smaller, maybe older, hotels. If your plan includes some of the larger chains, like Ibis, Marriott, etc.; then a room with two larger beds is very possible, much like what you encounter in the US at a typical hotel.

Great! Thanks everyone! This opens up many more options! I don't mind the twin size single... The important thing is some space between us!

Agree with Phillip, except it is "Zwei Bett Zimmer" (particularly note the 'ei'), or two bed room. A Zwei Bett Zimmer is usually a little more costly than a Doppel Zimmer.

A single bed in Germany is narrower, 0.9m wide, about 35½ inches vs 38 inches in the US.
