Hohenwerfen Fortress from Salzburg

We're planning a 2 or 3 day stay in Salzburg in late May/early June of next year. I'm a huge "Were Eagles Dare" film fan, and would like to visit Hohenwerfen Fortress.

Can anyone advise the best way in getting there from Salzburg -- train/rental car/tour ?

Thanks for your advice!

Are you planning on having a car anyway? If so, it is a piece of cake.

The S-Bahn out of Salzburg runs hourly to Werfen, the town above which Hohenwerfen sits. The trip takes just under an hour. There are also faster regional trains (REX) about every 2 hours and an occasional IC or EC, so about 2 trains per hour. The one way fare is 12€. You can do the round trip (except with an IC/EC) on an Einfach-Raus-Ticket for 35€ (2-5 people).

Hohenwerfen castle is visible from the Werfen train station. It is a considerable (~1 mi, 20 min), but pleasant, walk uphill (I did it at 68 with an arthritic knee). There is a bus stop in front of the castle, but I'm not sure from where the bus comes. I think it is bus 512, which goes between Tenneck and Werfen, but the schedule looks kind of irregular, so plan on walking.

charles,

Be sure to check the Official Website for opening times, admission charges, etc. Using the excellent directions that Lee provided, I'd probably just take a Taxi from the station to the Castle (unless of course you would enjoy the walk).

I didn't see any signs of a taxi around the station when I was there. I was there about the same time, end of May.

Werfen is a very small town, about 3000 people. A couple got off the train with me and said they were walking up to some ice caves.

When you walk from the train station to the castle, you'll come to an expressway (Salzachtalstr. - Rte 159). You can walk along the shoulder up to the castle, or you can cross Salzachtalstr. and take Marktstr. through town. Salzachtalstr. is a little shorter, but Marktstr. is more interesting (and safer).

Hohenwerfen castle, by the way, is the castle that was in the background behind the grassy slope in Sound of Music when Marie first taught the children to sing.

There is a ticket including the S-Bahn ride from Salzburg vice versa and admission to the fortress:
