I'm travelling with a coupleof WWII buffs but have heard this trip may be a waste of time. Can someone advise? We leave tomorrow so I'd like to cancel our tour beforehand if so!
It appeals more to Americans than anyone else, and WW2 buffs more so. It is one of the intact places attributed to Hitler, though he was only there maybe a dozen times or so, it was never a residence.
Some consider it interesting, the view is good, but like many WW2 sights, it is more what you bring to the experience than what is there. If it is an organized tour, you might get some interesting information.
I did both, and if you have to make a choice, the Königsee is more worthy of precious time in B-gaden. Maybe split up.
We're WWII buffs and thought it was well worth it. We went on a beautiful cloudless day and the views were incredible.
My husband and I planned on only 2 days in B-garden and wound up staying 5. He was a WWII buff but I loved the view, the ambiance and the food. We visited 3 times with a different view each time. It was neat to look down at the clouds and see a plane flying over them
Some places I would definitely add is a boat trip on the Konigsee, a trip to salt mines (wooden slide between floors.wow) and the cemetery in B-garden with the candles lit everyday and the interesting monuments
Follow the Romantic Road for a delightful trip
If you want to be "where it was" then you may be interested in it, and the Docu Centre at the base has good stuff.
If you want to see evidence of nazi or Hitler presence, you won't much. The place is now a restaurant and it has an original restored fireplace and a slab of stone with marks cut into it by American servicemen. There may be a couple of photos - my memory is foggy. I think the elevator is original or restored.
It was pretty much flattened during the war or just after.
The views are nice, but there are other mountains nearby too.
