Hiking sticks

My friend and I, aged 70 and 83, generally need and use hiking sticks on the woods trails at home for safety reasons. We are doing the My Way Alpine tour this August. Are hiking sticks readily available in Salzburg? Apparently they are not allowed through airport security…
Thanks so much for any advice?

If you can substitute a cane, they are allowed thru airport security as carry on. I take it, you do not care to check a bag?

Collapsible hiking poles are very common in the EU. They are readily available at most sporting goods places. Look for Intersport, Fitshop, or Hervis in Salzburg. Another option is to send them ahead of time to your hotel.

I have collapsible hiking poles. At least in the U.S., many do not collapse into a small to medium suitcase.

Perhaps contact your accommodation and see if they have loaners or to find out if any of the sporting goods shops rent them.

We would not travel without them and are happy to check our bags to accommodate them. Any reason you feel you need to do carry on bags?

It was easy to find collapsible poles on Amazon which fit diagonally in my 22" bag, which I checked.

The issue with the hiking poles is the metal tips. Even if they collapse small enough to fit in carry on bags, they will likely not be allowed because of the metal tips.

There is a store called CMP Store in Salzburg where you can buy them. Just outside of Salzburg, there is an Intersport, which will have them.

Mine seemed to get through security just fine in my carry-on. I’m sure one day I will lose them, but I’ll probably still keep trying. But they’re inexpensive.

You mean the ones with rubber pads on the bottom, not spikes, right?

I’d purchase poles at the Hervis next to the train station.

We usually have one pole each. I used to collapse them and put them in my carry on until one time I was told I had to check them. But we never check any baggage so I put up a fuss. The helpful agent suggested that what I had was in fact not a hiking pole but a "mobility device." Yes! Now I use it through security and limp happily to the boarding area, where we're usually asked if we want priority boarding. Yes,again!
