Heurigen : Vienna vineyards walking on own?

Hi--Is it possible to do our own walking of the vineyards and hit little taverns/eateries? Or, should we do an organized walk/bike tour?
I found a blog that I cannot seem to locate now that suggested the tram or bus stop to get to and just start walking. But since I can't seem to backtrack my search, I thought I'd source it to you. :)

Thanks,
JV

You can do it on your own, of course. Public transport is available to bring you to any starting points of your tour.
But you should check in beforehand where the little Heurigen are, and more importantly, when they are open. The smaller establishments have only certain dates (or weeks) during the season for offering wine and food.

If you are tough you can make the full route 1 (Stadtwanderweg = city hiking trail). Better is to go by bus (38A) to the top of Kahlenberg and do just the downward part.

Also nice:

Internet pages are in German only, but when using Google Translate easily understandable.

No reason to do this with a tour. I don’t even think that’s a thing.

Just take the 38a from Heiligenstadt U4 station to the Kahlenberg parking lot. Walk down to Nussdorf following the Stadtwanderweg 1 route that wmt1 suggests and which is very well marked. Stop at Mayer am Nussberg on your way down for wine and snacks. Views and vineyards galore.

Alternatively, you could do an equally lovely walk in the charming wine village if Stammersdorf. Take Tram 31 from the city center to the end station in Stammersdorf. Follow the well marked signs for Stadtwanderweg 5. Here’s a map - https://www.wien.gv.at/umwelt/wald/freizeit/wandern/wege/wanderweg5.html

The Kellergasse (wine cellar street) in Stammersdorf is full of charming heurigen with fantastic views. Here’s an English article - https://www.viennawurstelstand.com/article/stammersdorfer-kellergasse-a-guide-to-heurigen-hopping/
